The Almanac's Take

Killebrew turned routine fly balls into home runs with a swing so pure that Ted Williams called it the most natural he'd ever seen. The stocky slugger from Idaho somehow generated 573 career homers despite hitting just .256, proving that raw power could carry a player to Cooperstown in the dead-ball hangover era of the 1960s.

His 1970 season at age 34 captured his essence perfectly — a .271 average that barely impressed, but 41 bombs that left pitchers shaking their heads. That OPS+ of 135 tells the real story: when Killebrew connected, few hit it harder or farther.

The Twins built Metropolitan Stadium's dimensions around his left-handed stroke, and "Killer" rewarded them with 11 All-Star appearances and an MVP trophy. He proved that in baseball's most unforgiving decade for hitters, pure power could still make legends.
