The Almanac's Take

Allen's 1972 MVP season with the White Sox represents one of the great career revivals in baseball history. After bouncing between Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Los Angeles amid various controversies, the 30-year-old first baseman exploded for a 1.023 OPS and 154 OPS+ — easily the best offensive season of his career and good enough to carry Chicago to second place.

The numbers tell the story of a legitimately elite hitter who never quite got his due. That 126 career OPS+ places him among the premier offensive players of the 1960s and 70s, with 351 home runs in an era when that meant something. His seven All-Star selections and Rookie of the Year award speak to consistent excellence, even as team changes disrupted his peak years.

Allen's 2025 Hall of Fame induction by the Classic Baseball Era committee finally recognized what the stats always showed: a player whose raw talent and production belonged among the game's elite, regardless of the circumstances that defined his journey.
