The Almanac's Take

Wells pioneered the modern shortstop position in ways that wouldn't become standard until decades later. While his contemporaries treated shortstop as a defensive afterthought, Wells hit .327 over a 24-year career that spanned the Negro Leagues' golden age, posting an OPS+ of 108 that made him genuinely valuable on both sides of the ball.

His 1942 campaign at age 36 showcased remarkable longevity — a .342 average with an OPS+ of 134 that ranked among the best seasons by any shortstop of his era. Eight All-Star selections tell the story of sustained excellence that bridged the gap between the dead-ball era and integration.

The Hall of Fame finally recognized Wells in 1997, acknowledging what Negro League observers knew for decades: he redefined what a shortstop could be offensively while maintaining elite defense at baseball's most demanding position.
