The Almanac's Take

The Count was baseball's original two-way marvel, decades before anyone called it that. Mullane pitched with both hands during games — literally switching mid-batter when the situation called for it — while also playing outfield and logging nearly 800 games as a hitter. His .243 average across 2,720 at-bats represents legitimate offensive production from a pitcher in the dead-ball era.

On the mound, his 284 wins tell only part of the story. That 117 ERA+ across 14 seasons demonstrates consistent above-average pitching, with his peak 173 mark showing he could dominate when locked in. The Irish-born Mullane threw over 4,500 innings while striking out 1,803 batters, remarkable durability for someone who also shouldered a regular hitting load.

His ambidextrous pitching made him a curiosity, but his sustained excellence made him invaluable. Few players have ever combined such versatility with such longevity at the major league level.
