Sherm Lollar
The most underappreciated catcher of the 1950s wasn't Yogi Berra or Roy Campanella — it was Sherm Lollar, whose defensive wizardry behind the plate made the "Go-Go" White Sox hum. Those three Gold Gloves tell only part of the story of a backstop who called pitches for four different 90-win Chicago teams and helped transform the franchise's identity.
Lollar's .264 average over 18 seasons looks modest, but catchers weren't expected to hit in his era. What made him special was durability — 1,752 games caught in an age when the position destroyed bodies faster than it does today. Seven All-Star selections speak to the respect he commanded from peers who understood that winning baseball started with the man behind the plate, not the numbers on the back of his baseball card.
