Ryne Sandberg
Sandberg hit 282 home runs as a second baseman when that position was still dominated by slap hitters and defensive specialists. His 1990 season — 40 homers, .306 average — remains one of the most dominant campaigns by a middle infielder in baseball history.
The Cubs legend redefined what a second baseman could be offensively while never sacrificing defense. Those nine Gold Gloves weren't ceremonial; Sandberg combined elite power with vacuum-cleaner defense up the middle. His OPS+ peaked at 129 in that magical 1990 season, when he became just the third second baseman ever to reach 40 home runs.
Sandberg's 1984 MVP award came during the Cubs' first playoff appearance in 39 years, but his sustained excellence — seven Silver Sluggers, 10 All-Star selections — established the template for the modern power-hitting second baseman that persists today.
