Roy Campanella
Campanella's 1945 season in the Negro Leagues might be the greatest single year by a catcher in baseball history. That .372 average and 1.036 OPS came during his prime with the Baltimore Elite Giants, before he broke baseball's color barrier alongside Jackie Robinson.
His three MVP awards in the 1950s tell only part of the story. Campanella revolutionized catching with his powerful throwing arm and game-calling intelligence, while posting a career 118 OPS+ that made him elite on both sides of the plate. The combination of defensive mastery and offensive production was nearly unmatched at his position.
The tragic car accident that ended his career in 1958 robbed baseball of what could have been several more productive seasons. His 260 home runs came in just a decade of major league play, making his Hall of Fame induction a foregone conclusion.
