The Almanac's Take

Paul Konerko's defining moment came in Game 2 of the 2005 World Series, when he launched a grand slam that essentially sealed the White Sox's first championship in 88 years. But that clutch gene was evident throughout his 18-year career, particularly during his peak 2010 season when he hit .312 with 39 homers at age 34.

The numbers tell the story of a steadily productive slugger who delivered exactly what Chicago needed. His 439 career home runs and 1412 RBIs came with remarkable consistency — Konerko posted an OPS+ above 100 in 11 of his 16 full seasons. While never elite by sabermetric standards, his career 106 OPS+ represents the kind of reliable middle-of-the-order production that wins games.

Konerko embodied old-school baseball values in an era of increasing analytics. Six All-Star selections and a World Series ring made him a White Sox icon, the steady presence who anchored their lineup for over a decade.
