Oscar Charleston
Charleston might be the greatest all-around player you've never heard of. The Indianapolis ABC's center fielder hit .350 over a 27-year career while also taking the mound when needed, posting a respectable 4.48 ERA across 157 innings. His 1920 season captures his brilliance: a .333 average with an .892 OPS that was 29 percent better than league average.
What separated Charleston from his contemporaries was his combination of power, speed, and defensive range. At 183 career home runs, he provided legitimate pop in an era when the long ball was still emerging. His career 116 OPS+ speaks to consistent excellence across nearly three decades in the Negro Leagues.
The Hall of Fame finally recognized Charleston in 1976, but his legend had been secure for generations among those who saw him patrol center field with unmatched grace and authority.
