The Almanac's Take

Radbourn threw 678.2 innings in 1884 — a record that will never be broken in the modern era — while posting a 1.38 ERA and leading Providence to the championship. That season alone would cement his legend, but the man nicknamed "Old Hoss" for his durability was far more than a one-year wonder.

His career 126 ERA+ shows he was consistently above average across 11 seasons, with a peak season 225 ERA+ that ranks among the greatest pitching performances ever. Radbourn won 310 games against 194 losses while striking out 1,830 batters in an era when strikeouts were rare and hitters made more contact.

The Hall of Famer represents baseball's frontier days, when pitchers threw underhand and completed virtually every start. His 1884 workload seems mythical today, but it embodied the iron-man mentality that defined 19th-century baseball.
