Mickey Welch
"Smiling Mickey" won 300 games in just 13 seasons, but his real calling card was durability in an era when pitchers were expected to finish what they started. Welch threw over 400 innings in four different seasons, peaking at 557 innings in 1884 — a workload that would hospitalize modern pitchers.
His 2.71 career ERA looks modest until you consider he pitched in the offensive explosion of the 1880s and 1890s. That 112 ERA+ means he was consistently above average across wildly different run-scoring environments, from the dead-ball beginnings to higher-offense seasons. His peak 183 ERA+ in 1885 ranks among the best single seasons of the 19th century.
The Veterans Committee finally recognized Welch in 1973, acknowledging that 300 wins meant something different when achieved in baseball's formative decades. He represents the bridge between baseball's primitive origins and its modern form.
