The Almanac's Take

The only player in any Hall of Fame who excelled as both a position player and pitcher, Dihigo was baseball's ultimate two-way threat decades before anyone coined the term. His .311 career batting average and 124 OPS+ came while simultaneously posting a 3.63 ERA and 122 ERA+ over 64 pitching appearances — numbers that would be remarkable for a specialist, let alone someone doing both.

Called "El Maestro" across Latin America, Dihigo played professionally in Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, and the Negro Leagues, mastering every position on the field. He pitched no-hitters, won batting titles, and managed teams to championships in multiple countries.

What made Dihigo legendary wasn't just his versatility but his dominance at everything he tried. His peak 175 ERA+ shows he could shut down hitters at an elite level, while his consistent .311 batting average proves he belonged in any lineup. No player before or since has combined such sustained excellence on both sides of the ball.
