The Almanac's Take

Appling hit .310 over 20 seasons while playing shortstop in an era when the position was considered a defensive afterthought. That batting average becomes even more impressive when you realize he spent his entire career with the White Sox during some of their worst decades, rarely seeing quality pitching from facing weak competition.

The seven All-Star selections tell only part of the story. Appling's longevity was remarkable — he played until age 43 and maintained that .310 average across two full decades of baseball. His 45 career home runs might seem paltry by modern standards, but power wasn't expected from shortstops in the 1930s and 1940s.

What made Appling special was his combination of contact hitting and durability at a premium defensive position. He earned his Hall of Fame plaque in 1964 by being consistently excellent rather than occasionally brilliant, the kind of steady performer who becomes more valuable with each passing season.
