The Almanac's Take

The "Gay Caballero" wasn't just a Hall of Fame pitcher — he was a World Series savant who never lost a Fall Classic game, going 6-0 with a 2.86 ERA across five championships with the Yankees. Gomez's October magic included a complete game victory in Game 1 of the 1932 World Series, setting the tone for New York's sweep of the Cubs.

His 1934 season stands as one of the greatest pitching campaigns in Yankees history. That 26-5 record with a 2.33 ERA came during the heart of the live-ball era, when his 184 ERA+ made him 84 percent better than the average pitcher. The southpaw struck out 158 batters while walking just 96, showcasing the control that separated him from mere throwers.

Gomez retired with 189 wins and a 117 career ERA+, but his legend lives in those clutch October performances. In an era of offensive explosion, he consistently rose to baseball's biggest moments.
