The Almanac's Take

Ward revolutionized two positions simultaneously, becoming the only Hall of Famer to excel as both a pitcher and everyday shortstop. His 164 wins and 2.10 ERA anchored Providence's 1879 championship before arm trouble forced his transition to the field full-time in 1885.

The switch proved brilliant. Ward hit .275 over 17 seasons while pioneering modern shortstop play, using his pitcher's intelligence to position himself perfectly. His 122 career ERA+ ranks among the best for pitchers with significant innings, while his glove work helped establish shortstop as baseball's most demanding defensive position.

Beyond statistics, Ward founded the first players' union and earned a law degree from Columbia. His dual mastery remains unmatched — no player since has thrown 2,000 innings and played 1,000 games at shortstop with comparable skill.
