The Almanac's Take

McGinnity earned his "Iron Man" nickname the hard way — he regularly pitched both games of doubleheaders and threw more than 400 innings in four straight seasons from 1900-1903. His 434 innings in 1903 remains a post-1893 record that will never be touched in the modern game. The durability wasn't just about quantity; he maintained a 2.66 ERA across 3,441 career innings while winning 246 games.

What made McGinnity special wasn't overpowering stuff but exceptional control and an underhand delivery that baffled hitters of his era. His peak ERA+ of 165 came during the dead-ball era when runs were precious, and he helped the Giants win pennants in 1904 and 1905. Before baseball, he actually worked in an iron foundry — making his nickname doubly appropriate for a pitcher who treated his arm like an indestructible machine.
