The Almanac's Take

Collins revolutionized third base defense in ways that still echo today. Before him, third basemen played shallow and relied on quick reflexes. Collins pioneered the deep positioning and charging technique for bunts that became the modern standard, earning recognition as baseball's first great hot corner specialist.

His .294 career average across 14 seasons was impressive for the dead-ball era, but defense made him legendary. Playing primarily for Boston teams in both leagues, Collins anchored championship clubs while setting the template for how the position should be played. Contemporary accounts describe his range and arm as otherworldly for the time.

The Hall of Fame waited until 1945 to recognize Collins, but his influence was immediate and lasting. Every third baseman since has used fundamentals he established over a century ago.
