The Almanac's Take

The sweet swing that made Thome a walking home run threat masked one of baseball's most remarkable consistency stories. His 612 career homers came without fanfare or controversy — just two decades of patient hitting that produced double-digit home runs in 19 consecutive seasons from 1993 to 2011.

That 2002 campaign represents peak Thome, when he nearly carried Cleveland to the playoffs with 52 bombs and a 1.122 OPS. But the real magic was his longevity. Most sluggers flame out after 35, yet Thome hit 89 homers after turning 40, including a 2006 season where he slugged .598 at age 35.

The Hall of Fame recognized what advanced metrics always showed: Thome's 122 career OPS+ placed him among the elite offensive forces of the expansion era. He never won an MVP, but few players sustained excellence longer.
