The Almanac's Take

Jensen was the rare athlete who could have starred in any sport — he quarterbacked at Cal and played in the 1949 Rose Bowl before choosing baseball. His 1958 MVP season with the Red Sox showcased a complete player: 35 homers, 122 RBIs, and Gold Glove defense in right field.

What made Jensen special wasn't just the numbers but the clutch factor. He led the American League in RBIs three times during the late 1950s, driving in runs when they mattered most. His .279 career average might seem modest, but he compensated with power and exceptional defensive instincts.

Jensen's career ended prematurely due to his fear of flying, forcing him to retire at 34 rather than endure cross-country travel. He remains one of the most accomplished two-sport athletes in American history.
