The Almanac's Take

The spitball made Chesbro a legend, but his 1904 season made him immortal. That year, he won 41 games for the New York Highlanders — a modern record that will never be touched. He completed 48 of his 51 starts and threw over 450 innings, numbers that seem fictional by today's standards.

Chesbro's career 198 wins came in just 11 seasons, powered by that wet one that dancing through the strike zone. His 2.68 ERA and 108 ERA+ marked him as consistently above average during the dead-ball era, but it was his workhorse mentality that separated him from contemporaries.

The tragic irony? A wild pitch on the season's final day cost his Highlanders the 1904 pennant, overshadowing what remains the greatest single-season pitching performance in baseball history. Elected to Cooperstown in 1946, "Happy Jack" proved that sometimes one superhuman season can define an entire career.
