Frank Chance
The Peerless Leader earned his nickname by doing something no manager has matched since: winning four pennants in five years while playing first base full-time. Chance's Cubs dominated the National League from 1906-1910, capturing 530 wins in that stretch with him anchoring both the lineup and the dugout.
His .296 career average understates his value in the dead-ball era, when offense was scarce and situational hitting paramount. More telling: those 596 RBI came in just 1,288 games, a rate that would translate to over 100 RBI per 162-game season. The Cubs scored runs in bunches during their dynasty years, and Chance was the steady presence driving them home.
The Hall recognized him in 1946 not just for individual statistics, but for leadership that produced results. Player-managers were common then, but few combined Chance's on-field production with his tactical brilliance from the bench.
