The Almanac's Take

The smartest player of the Deadball Era might have been Collins, whose .333 career average over 25 seasons speaks to an almost supernatural ability to adapt as baseball evolved around him. While peers fell off when the live ball arrived in 1920, Collins hit .372 at age 37 in 1924 — proof that his approach transcended any single era's style of play.

What made Collins special wasn't just the hitting but the complete package. He stole over 740 bases while playing elite defense at second base, becoming the template for the modern two-way middle infielder. His 1914 MVP award came during the peak of his powers, when he combined speed, average, and baseball IQ better than anyone in the game.

Collins played in four different decades and five World Series, winning three. For a generation that watched baseball transform from inside-the-park strategy to Babe Ruth's revolution, he was the constant — always finding ways to help his team win.
