The Almanac's Take

Big Ed owns the lowest career ERA in baseball history at 1.82, a record that becomes more staggering when you consider he pitched in the dead-ball era's twilight, not its peak. While his contemporaries like Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson get more attention, Walsh was quietly more dominant — his 145 ERA+ means he was 45% better than the average pitcher of his time.

The spitball made Walsh nearly unhittable during his prime with the White Sox. His 1908 season stands as one of pitching's greatest individual campaigns: a microscopic 1.42 ERA across 464 innings, numbers that boggle the modern mind. He threw more than 400 innings three times, workloads that would hospitalize today's starters.

Walsh's career was relatively brief but brutally effective. The Hall of Fame recognized his excellence in 1946, though his 1.82 ERA alone should have sealed that fate decades earlier.
