The Almanac's Take

The only man to lead both leagues in hitting average died at 35 under mysterious circumstances at Niagara Falls, cutting short one of the greatest careers in baseball history. Delahanty's .346 lifetime average ranks among the best ever, achieved during the dead-ball era when such numbers seemed impossible.

His 1899 season stands as a monument to offensive dominance — he hit .410 while driving in 137 runs for Philadelphia. Delahanty possessed rare power for his era, collecting 101 career home runs when most players struggled to reach double digits. He remains one of only a handful of players to hit four home runs in a single game.

Big Ed could flat-out hit, posting a .300 average or better in 13 of his 16 seasons. His combination of average and power made him the prototype modern slugger, decades before Ruth changed the game. The Hall of Fame recognized his brilliance in 1945, though fans can only wonder what numbers he might have compiled with a full career.
