The Almanac's Take

Doc dominated in the mid-1980s as one of baseball's most dominant young arms, winning the 1984 Rookie of the Year and 1985 Cy Young at age 20 and 21 respectively. His 1985 season—24 wins, 1.53 ERA, and 268 strikeouts—remains among the greatest pitching campaigns ever. Though injuries and inconsistency tempered his peak afterward, Gooden finished with 194 wins, 2293 strikeouts, and a 119 ERA+ that reflects a Hall of Fame-caliber run early on.
