The Almanac's Take

The changeup artist who nobody saw coming lasted 19 seasons by mastering baseball's most deceptive pitch. Jones threw his changeup roughly 85% of the time, an astronomical rate that would be considered lunacy today but worked brilliantly in an era of fastball-heavy relievers.

His 1992 season with Houston stands as one of the great relief performances in history — that 1.85 ERA was more than twice as good as league average, supported by a devastating changeup that hitters knew was coming but couldn't touch. Jones parlayed that signature pitch into 303 career saves despite never throwing particularly hard.

The five All-Star selections tell the story of sustained excellence built on craft rather than raw stuff. His 134 career ERA+ proves he was consistently above average throughout nearly two decades, a remarkable achievement for any pitcher but especially one who relied almost exclusively on changing speeds and eye levels.
