The Almanac's Take

Davis carved out one of baseball's most underrated careers by mastering the art of steady production across two decades. His 350 home runs came without fanfare or peak seasons that screamed MVP, but the consistency was remarkable — he posted an OPS+ above 100 in 12 different seasons, including his career-best 127 mark during the shortened 1994 campaign with California.

The Jamaica-born slugger exemplified the emerging designated hitter prototype of the 1980s and 90s. While his .274 career average suggests an ordinary hitter, Davis understood his role perfectly: get on base, drive in runs, and provide veteran leadership. His 108 career OPS+ tells the real story — he was 8 percent better than league average over nearly 20 seasons, a testament to professional hitting that today's analytics crowd would absolutely love.

Davis bridged baseball eras, playing through the offensive explosion of the late 90s while maintaining the disciplined approach that made him valuable from day one.
