The Almanac's Take

The shortstop who could do everything. Wallace spent his first nine seasons as a two-way player, posting a 117 ERA+ on the mound while manning the infield — a combination almost unthinkable in modern baseball. His 3.87 ERA came during the height of the dead-ball era when offense was scarce, making him a genuinely valuable pitcher.

But defense made him a legend. Wallace played 2383 games over 25 seasons, most of them at shortstop during baseball's roughest defensive era. Those dirt infields and tiny gloves meant his steady .268 average and 1121 RBIs were secondary to his glove work.

His longevity tells the story — you don't play a quarter-century in the majors without being special. The Veterans Committee recognized this in 1953, understanding that Wallace's value transcended the basic counting stats that survived from his era.
