Biz Mackey
The most remarkable thing about Mackey isn't his .329 career average or six All-Star selections — it's that he was considered the greatest defensive catcher in Negro League history while maintaining elite offensive production for nearly three decades. His 1031 games behind the plate represent an extraordinary feat of durability in an era when catching was even more punishing than today.
Mackey's offensive consistency was legendary among his peers, who often called him the "Black Mickey Cochrane." That .329 career mark held steady across different leagues and decades, from his 1920 debut with the Indianapolis ABCs through his final season in 1947. His balanced approach — decent power with 64 homers, excellent contact, and clutch hitting that drove in 698 runs — made him the complete package.
What separated Mackey from other great catchers was his baseball IQ and leadership. He mentored younger players and was known for calling brilliant games, skills that don't show up in box scores but made him invaluable to every team he joined.
