The Almanac's Take

The fastball that earned Rusie the nickname "The Hoosier Thunderbolt" was so overpowering that it literally changed baseball's rules. His blazing speed prompted officials to move the pitcher's mound back from 50 feet to the modern 60 feet, 6 inches in 1893 — yet he kept dominating hitters anyway.

Rusie struck out 1,950 batters across 13 seasons while posting a 127 ERA+, meaning he was 27 percent better than league average throughout his career. His peak 192 ERA+ in 1894 represents one of the most dominant pitching seasons of the 1890s. The right-hander won 246 games despite losing nearly two full seasons to contract disputes with the notoriously cheap New York Giants ownership.

Modern fans should understand that Rusie was baseball's first true power pitcher, the Nolan Ryan of the gaslight era. His influence extended beyond statistics — he forced the game itself to evolve.
