The Almanac's Take

The shortstop who anchored Detroit's 1984 championship team finally got his due when the Modern Era Committee elected him to Cooperstown in 2018. Trammell's case always hinged on longevity and peak value—he delivered both across two decades in the Motor City.

His 1987 campaign represents one of the finest seasons by a shortstop in the 1980s. That .343 average and .953 OPS came during his age-29 season, proving he could be an offensive force even as defensive responsibilities remained paramount. The 28 home runs that year nearly matched his previous career high.

Four Gold Gloves tell only part of Trammell's defensive story. He redefined what offensive production looked like from shortstop during an era when the position was considered a black hole for hitting. His 102 career OPS+ proves he was consistently above average with the bat while providing elite glovework up the middle.
