The Almanac's Take

Joss posted the second-lowest career ERA in baseball history at 1.89, a mark that becomes even more remarkable when you consider he pitched during the offensive explosion of the early 1900s. His 1908 season stands as one of the greatest pitching performances ever recorded — that 1.16 ERA with an ERA+ of 207 means he was literally twice as good as the average pitcher in a year when runs were already scarce.

The tragedy of Joss lies not just in his death from tubercular meningitis at 31, but in how brief his dominance was. Nine seasons, 160 wins, and an ERA+ of 148 that puts him among the elite pitchers of any era. He threw a perfect game and a no-hitter, but those highlights pale next to the sustained brilliance of allowing fewer than two runs per nine innings across his entire career.

The Veterans Committee recognized what the numbers screamed in 1978 — Joss belonged in Cooperstown despite falling short of traditional counting stats through no fault of his own.
